Love's Return: Psychoanalytic Essays on Childhood, Teaching, and Learning

Love's Return: Psychoanalytic Essays on Childhood, Teaching, and Learning
Routledge; 1 edition | April 4, 2006 | ISBN-10: 0415952050 | 304 pages | PDF | 2.20 MB

The idea that teachers love children is often taken for granted in education. Rarely is the idea of love itself examined. Bringing together the work of educators, curriculum theorists and clinical psychoanalysts, and drawing upon autobiographical and narrative case studies, this groundbreaking collection examines the collision of love and learning, including the ways in which such intersections are provoked, repressed and denied. Contributors turn to psychoanalysis to explore questions of love in all of its varying permutations - ambivalence, sexuality, hatred, desire, projection, and loss - in order to demonstrate how the social ramifications of such work is critical to the ways teachers are currently being prepared for life in the classroom.

The Sun, Stars, and Galaxies (Solar System) by Michael Anderson
Rosen Education Service | English | 2011 | ISBN: 161530519X | 96 pages | PDF | 14 MB

Most avid sky gazers wait until nightfall to catch a glimpse of the stars that are scattered across the heavens. The fact of the matter is that one needs only to feel the Suns rays in order to experience the presence of a star. The Sun is an ordinary star, a ball of hot gas much like millions of others in the universe, but as the center of the solar system, it is critical to the survival of all life forms on Earth. This comprehensive volume examines the nature of the Sun and details the properties and types of various stars, as well as the greater galaxies of which they are a part.

The first volume of George R R Martin's glorious high fantasy tells the tragic story of treachery, greed and war that threatens the unity of the Seven Kingdoms south of the Wall. Martin unfolds with astonishing skill a tale of truly epic dimensions, thronged with memorable characters, a story of treachery and ambition, love and magic.

Set in a fabulous world scarred by battle and catastrophe over 8000 years of recorded history, it tells of the deeds of men and women locked in the deadliest of conflicts and the terrible legacy they will leave their children. In the game of thrones, you win or you die. And in the bitter-cold, unliving lands beyond the Wall, a terrible winter gathers and the others -- the undead, the neverborn, wildlings to whom the threat of the sword is nothing -- make ready to descend on the realms of men.

A Game of Thrones begins the most imaginative, ambitious and compelling fantasy epic since The Lord of the Rings. Thronged with memorable characters, it unfolds with astonishing skill a tale of truly epic dimensions. There have been many pretenders to the throne of Tolkien: now at last he has a true heir.

Even so, Joffrey is now a boy-king, Cersei is his regent, and war is inevitable. In Dragonstone, Robert’s brother Stannis has declared himself king, while his other brother Renly proclaims himself king at Storm’s End – and Eddard Stark’s fifteen year old son Robb wears the crown of the north at Winterfell.A comet in the night sky, red and malevolent, the colour of blood and flame, can only be an omen of murder and war.

Stannis’s child Princess Shireen dreams of dragons waking from stone. And a white raven has brought word from the Citadel itself, foretelling summer’s end. It has been the longest summer in living memory, lasting ten years, and the smallfolk say it means an even longer winter to come…The first rule of war is never give the enemy his wish. But winter will be the biggest enemy. From beyond the Wall the undead and Others clamour for freedom, and from beyond the sea the long-dead Dragon King’s daughter hatches her revenge. Robb Stark will be exceedingly lucky to reach adulthood.

A Feast for Crows (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 4) - George R. R. Martin

A Feast for Crows (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 4) - George R. R. Martin
Publisher: Harper Voyager; (Reissue) edition (1 Sep 2011) | ISBN-10: 0007447868 | EPUB/MOBI | 2.07KB/1.42KB | 976 pages

The fourth volume in the hugely popular and highly acclaimed epic fantasy. There is passion here, and misery and charm, grandeur and squalor, tragedy, nobility and courage.

Bloodthirsty, treacherous and cunning, the Lannisters are in power on the Iron Throne in the name of the boy-king Tommen. But fear and deceit are in the air: their enemies are poised to strike.

The Martells of Dorne seek vengeance for their dead, and the heir of King Balon of the Iron Isles, Euron Crow's Eye, is as black a pirate as ever raised a sail.

Across the war-torn landscape of the Seven Kingdoms, Brienne the Beauty (thus named in mockery of her great size and strength) seeks for Sansa Stark, having vowed to protect Sansa from the wrath of Queen Cersei, Tommen's power-hungry mother.

Meanwhile apprentice Maester Samwell Tarly brings a mysterious babe in arms south to the Citadel from the cruel frozen north where the sinister Others threaten the Wall…

‘A Feast for Crows’ brings to life dark magic, complex political intrigue and horrific bloodshed. Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, victory may go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel…and the coldest hearts.

A History of Intelligence and Intellectual Disability

A History of Intelligence and Intellectual Disability
Ashgate | July 1, 2011 | ISBN-10: 1409420213 | 388 pages | PDF | 5.46 MB

Starting with the controversial hypothesis that not only human intelligence but also its antithesis 'intellectual disability' are nothing more than historical contingencies, C.F. Goodey's paradigm-shifting study traces the rich interplay between human types and the radically changing characteristics attributed to them. From the twelfth-century beginnings of European social administration to the onset of formal human science disciplines in the modern era, "A History of Intelligence and 'Intellectual Disability'" reconstructs the sociopolitical and religious contexts of intellectual ability and disability and demonstrates how these concepts became part of psychology, medicine and biology. Goodey examines a wide array of classical, late medieval and Renaissance texts, from popular guides on conduct and behavior to medical treatises and from religious and philosophical works to poetry and drama. Focusing especially on the period between the Protestant Reformation and 1700, Goodey challenges the accepted wisdom that would have us believe that 'intelligence' and 'disability' describe natural, trans-historical realities. Instead, Goodey argues for a model that views intellectual disability and indeed the intellectually disabled person as temporary cultural creations. His book is destined to become a standard resource for scholars interested in the history of psychology and medicine, the social origins of human self-representation, and current ethical debates about the genetics of intelligence.

J.hn B..mins P-hing C-ny | 2011 | ISBN: 9027205248 | 181 pages | PDF | 2,2 MB

This volume discusses several facets of English in today's multilingual Europe. It emphasizes the interdependence between cultures, languages and situations that influence its use. This interdependence is particularly relevant to European settings where English is being learned as a second language. Such learning situations constitute the core focus of the book. The volume is unique in bringing together empirical studies examining factors that promote the learning of English in Europe. Rather than assuming that English is a threat to linguistic diversity and cultural independence, these studies discuss psycholinguistic factors such as the input, and sociolinguistic factors such as the type of English that is targeted in learning. The contributing authors are well-established specialists who have worked on multilingualism, English as a Lingua Franca and second language acquisition. The book will be of interest to applied linguists, sociolinguists and teachers of English as a foreign language.

Adam's Gift: A Memoir of a Pastor’s Calling to Defy the Church’s Persecution of Lesbians and Gays

Jimmy Creech, "Adam's Gift: A Memoir of a Pastor’s Calling to Defy the Church’s Persecution of Lesbians and Gays"
Publisher: Duke University Press Books | ISBN 10: 0822348853 | 2011 | PDF | 376 pages | 10.6 MB

Jimmy Creech, a United Methodist pastor in North Carolina, was visited one morning in 1984 by Adam, a longtime parishioner whom he liked and respected. Adam said that he was gay, and that he was leaving The United Methodist Church, which had just pronounced that “self-avowed practicing homosexuals” could not be ordained. He would not be part of a community that excluded him. Creech found himself instinctively supporting Adam, telling him that he was sure that God loved and accepted him as he was. Adam’s Gift is Creech’s inspiring first-person account of how that conversation transformed his life and ministry.

Adam’s visit prompted Creech to re-evaluate his belief that homosexuality was a sin, and to research the scriptural basis for the church’s position. He determined that the church was mistaken, that scriptural translations and interpretations had been botched and dangerously distorted. As a Christian, Creech came to believe that discriminating against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people was morally wrong. This understanding compelled him to perform same-gender commitment ceremonies, which conflicted with church directives. Creech was tried twice by The United Methodist Church, and, after the second trial, his ordination credentials were revoked. Adam’s Gift is a moving story and an important chapter in the unfinished struggle for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender civil and human rights.

Descartes: An Intellectual Biography

Descartes: An Intellectual Biography
Oxford University Press, USA | July 17, 1997 | ISBN-10: 0198237243 | 520 pages | PDF | 35.66 MB

Like Daniel Garber's Descartes' Metaphysical Physics, this book goes far beyond the usual treatment of Descartes merely as an epistemologist (although that important aspect of his thinking is explained here in exemplary fashion) to show his larger purpose of creating a comprehensive world view based on the new mechanistic science of Copernicus and Galileo. Though Gaukroger (philosophy, Univ. of Sidney) is concerned principally with Descartes's intellectual development, which is traced from early childhood, the factual details of his life are authoritatively and exhaustively chronicled. Quoting from the philosopher's correspondence, Gaukroger creates a flesh-and-blood Descartes, a man of passion, actively engaged in the world and the concerns of his time.

The Other Architecture: Tasks of Practice Beyond Design

The Other Architecture: Tasks of Practice Beyond Design By Ralph W. Liebing
Publisher: Spri.,.nger Vienna Architecture 2011 | 420 Pages | ISBN: 3709102626 | PDF | 10 MB

How does the architectural design become reality? After a successful presentation come the phase of tenders and that of their realization. Design must now be reformulated into working drawings. That s exactly what Liebing, a renowned expert for plan views and detailed views, calls the other architecture . Working drawings constitute the basis for the real construction itself. In the firms, mostly young architects are charged with these tasks. But during education, this topic is often addressed insufficiently. The correct transformation of a presentation design into working drawings for a bid and its realization is however essential for the quality of execution. The Other Architecture understands itself as a practical manual for young architects and as a complement in the field of building construction for students.

Tiger

"Tiger" by Susie Green
R B-s | 224 pages | English | 2006 | ISBN: 1861892764 | PDF | 2,4 MB

Contrary to popular belief, it is the tiger, not the lion, who is the true king of the jungle. A male tiger can grow to eleven feet in length and weigh more than 650 pounds. Sleek, powerful, and mysterious, the tiger is revered as a potent symbol of sexuality and ferocity in many cultures around the world. Yet the tiger’s strength and beauty has also been its downfall—nearly every part of the tiger has a value to poachers, including the animal’s hide, teeth, bones, and even sexual organs.

With Tiger, author Susie Green explores the tiger’s new status as both predator and prey. She also examines the tiger’s rich cultural history, from its valued position in Taoist mythology and the Chinese Zodiac, to more recent interpretations of the tiger’s prowess in the work of Salvador Dalí. Smart, readable, and lushly illustrated, Tiger will appeal to the wide audience that admires this wonderfully vital yet highly endangered species.

Parasites and the Behavior of Animals

Parasites and the Behavior of Animals
Oxford University Press, USA; 1 edition | January 31, 2002 | ISBN-10: 0195084411 | 338 pages | PDF | 22.60 MB

When a parasite invades an ant, does the ant behave like other ants? Maybe not-and if it doesn't, who, if anyone, benefits from the altered behaviors? The parasite? The ant? Parasites and the Behavior of Animals shows that parasite-induced behavioral alterations are more common than we might realize, and it places these alterations in an evolutionary and ecological context. Emphasizing eukaryotic parasites, the book examines the adaptive nature of behavioral changes associated with parasitism, exploring the effects of these changes on parasite transmission, parasite avoidance, and the fitness of both host and parasite.

Helen Schulman - This Beautiful Life
Publisher: Harper | ISBN: 0062024388 | August 2, 2011 | EPUB/MOBI | 240 pages | 238 KB/450 KB
When the Bergamots move from a comfortable upstate college town to New York City, they’re not quite sure how they’ll adapt—or what to make of the strange new world of well-to-do Manhattan. Soon, though, Richard is consumed by his executive role at a large New York university, and Liz, who has traded in her academic career to oversee the lives of their children, is hectically ferrying young Coco around town.

Fifteen-year-old Jake is gratefully taken into the fold by a group of friends at Wildwood, an elite private school.

But the upper-class cocoon in which they have enveloped themselves is ripped apart when Jake wakes up one morning after an unchaperoned party and finds an email in his in-box from an eighth-grade admirer. Attached is a sexually explicit video she has made for him. Shocked, stunned, maybe a little proud, and scared—a jumble of adolescent emotion—he forwards the video to a friend, who then for-wards it to a friend. Within hours, it’s gone viral, all over the school, the city, the world.

The ensuing scandal threatens to shatter the Bergamots’ sense of security and identity, and, ultimately, their happiness. They are a good family faced with bad choices, and how they choose to react, individually and at one another’s behest, places everything they hold dear in jeopardy.

This Beautiful Life is a devastating exploration of the blurring boundaries of privacy and the fragility of self, a clear-eyed portrait of modern life that will have readers debating their assumptions about family, morality, and the sacrifices and choices we make in the name of love.

Julia Glass - The Whole World Over

Julia Glass - The Whole World Over
Publisher: Anchor | ISBN: 1400075769 | 2007 | EPUB/MOBI | 576 pages | 652 KB/946 KB
Greenie Duquette loves her cozy life in the West Village, her work as a pastry chef, and her precocious young son. But she is fed up with her husband, Alan, an underemployed psychotherapist whose once passionate beliefs are ossifying into reflexive bitterness. When, in early 2000, the brash Republican governor of New Mexico offers her a lucrative job, she jumps at it; Alan is free to follow her if he chooses. In Glass's sprawling follow-up to her award-winning novel "Three Junes," a dozen or so characters are plunged into the tumultuous dissatisfactions and challenges of middle age, their paths crossing and recrossing with a pleasing mixture of chance and inevitability. Glass is fascinated by the ways people gamble both with and for their happiness, but her characters are a little too decent, generous, and forgiving. Even as we watch their dramas unfold in the shadow of 9/11, the potential horror of irrevocable choices eludes us.

Zwischen zwei Disziplinen: B. L. van der Waerden und die Entwicklung der Quantenmechanik

Martina R. Schneider, "Zwischen zwei Disziplinen: B. L. van der Waerden und die Entwicklung der Quantenmechanik"
Sp,..ger | 2011 | ISBN: 3642218245 | 426 pages | PDF | 6,1 MB
